Orderbook on Canton Network

A non-custodial orderbook, delivered for Temple Digital Group

Temple Digital Group, builder of the first central limit orderbook on the Canton Network, partnered with IntellectEU for assistance with Daml architecture. The result – a central limit order book live on Canton MainNet where users never give up custody of their assets.

CHALLENGE

The deadline was fixed. The harder constraint was architectural. Temple's orderbook must never become a custodian, which means locking collateral it does not control. In its first version, Canton's Token Standard let asset owners withdraw allocations unilaterally, so hard-locking an asset without the owner's signature was not possible. The orderbook also had to accept tokens from several stablecoin issuers and pool them into one orderbook.

SOLUTION

IntellectEU and CatalyX assisted with the design and development of the Daml smart contract layer behind three products, all on one settlement architecture that is token-agnostic and never takes custody.

The order book settles atomically onchain. Collateral locking and batch matching use allocation-based locking and cryptographic authorization proofs, so a user's assets stay theirs through the whole trade.

Vault as a Service locks depositors' assets, issues tradable receipt tokens, and pays returns pro rata from off-chain allocations managed by institutional custodians.

RESULT

Temple demonstrated batch order matching to Digital Asset Foundation leads. The orderbook went live on Canton MainNet in early January, roughly eleven weeks from kick-off.

Temple is now the #1 app in the Canton ecosystem by transaction volume and burn (as of September 2026). Still in production.

Key Outcomes

Key

Non-custodial, with atomic settlement

Users keep ownership throughout. Allocation-based locking and cryptographic authorization proofs settle trades without Temple ever holding client funds.

Trophy

#1 application in the Canton Network

Temple leads the Canton Network on transaction volume and app profitability.

Account tree

One architecture, multiple products

The same settlement layer carries the orderbook and the vault product, so each new product builds on the last.
